APIDA Heritage Month

SDSU APIDA Heritage and History Month

Dear SDSU Community,

This month, we come together to celebrate our 6th annual campus-wide Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage and History Month.

Since the late 1970s, May has been recognized as a time to celebrate APIDA people, heritage and history. This nationwide celebration amplifies the experiences, contributions and achievements of APIDA communities.

The month of May was chosen because it commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, which was made possible by the critical contributions of Chinese laborers. APIDA Heritage and History Month is dedicated to examining and honoring the important roles APIDA communities have played in shaping U.S. culture and history. Today, it also serves as a call to be united against anti-Asian sentiments.

SDSU has a strong and vibrant APIDA community and provides resources through the Office for Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) Affairs, APIDA Center, APIDA student organizations, APIDA and Bayanihan employee resource groups, the Charles Wei-hsun Fu Center for Asian and Pacific Studies, Asian American Studies program, the Chinese Cultural Center and more!

Join us this month as we observe APIDA Heritage and History Month. All members of the SDSU community are invited to participate. Our highlighted events are included in the calendar below..
